Use of the Peak-Hold Selector

- When the Peak- hold selector is pressed. the peak of the
greatly varying signal levels is hold" for continuous
display. During the time that the Peak-hold selector is
set for the hold" condition. the peak recording level is
displayed continuously so that it can be easily deter-
mined.

- The peak value can be hold" for display both when the
meters are used for VU indication and when they are used
for peak-level indication.

Brightness Adjustment of the Fluorescent level
Meters

If the Meter brightness-adjustment control is turned to the
dim" position. the meter will be dimly illuminated. If the
control is turned to the bright" position, the meter will be
brightly illuminated. The Meter brightness-adjustment
control can be set to any position between the "dim" posi-
tion and the "bright" position.

HINTS FOR BETTER RECORDING RESULTS

Recording from a Phone Disc

Before beginning the recording. play the disc once in the
place which is apt to have maximum level. with the Monitor
selector set for monitoring of the source sound. Then set
the Peak- hold selector for peak-hold operation. Alter the
part which has the maximum level has been played. read the
level-value displayed by the Fluorescent level meters. and
then make the adjustment of the recording level accordingly
if the displayed value is too high.
For peak-level indication...Fieduce the level slightly if the
illuminated value exceeds + ads.
For VU indication ............ Reduce the level slightly if the
illuminated value exceeds OdB.

Peak Factor of the Sound Source

The Fluorescent level meters of this unit can be used to
determine the peak factor" of recorded tape (with the
Monitor selector set for monitoring of the tape sound) or of
the sound source (with the Monitor selector set for moni-
toring of the source sound).

To do 50. first the Peak/VU selector should be set so that
the Fluorescent level meters display the peak-level indica-
tion. Then play the music source in order to activate the
displays of the meters. and set the Peak-hold selector to
"hold" the peak.

After playing the part for which the peak factor is to be
determined. play it once again. but this time with the Peak!
VU selector set so that the meters display the VU indica-
tion.

The peak-factor is the difference between the level dis-
played at this time and the value obtained previously when
the level was hold."

The peak-factor should be about 8dB for an ordinary music
source. but this may be somewhat higher for music which
includes a great deal of perCUssion instruments or for
sounds which were recorded "live" (not under controlled
conditions such as in a recording studio).

For Your Reference

The method described in the section Recording Level
Adjustment" is a method based on the assumption that the
peak factor of an ordinary muslc source is approximately
8dB.

Most sound sources can be recorded with good results by
following this method.

to discover peak factors which can be used appropriately for
recording of the various music sources.

Example 1:

o if the sharpness" of the sound of percussion instru-
ments is important, even if noise increases slightly. in
music which is mainly percussion:

The peak indication should not exceed +8dB. The VU
indication can be as low as about - 5dB. however.

0 if it is important to reduce noise:
The VU indication should be within the range of - 3GB to
(M8.
The peak indication. however, can exceed + 808 without
ill effect.

Example 2:

0 If for chamber music which has a peak factor of only
about 3dB. the VU indication is about +4dB when the
peak indication has been set not to exceed about 4» 8d8:
Sound will be clear if the VU indication does not exceed
OdB and the peak indication is about + 3dB.

RECORDING DURING PLAYBACK

With this unit it is possible to begin a recording. without

stopping the tape. during playback of a recorded tape. .

1. With the unit in the playback mode. set the Monitor
selector for monitoring of the source sound.

2. A recording can be started. while the tape is moving in
the playback mode, by pressing the Record button while
pressing the Playback button.

« if only the Record Button is pressed during playback,
there will be no change to the recording mode. Be
sure to check whether the Record-indication lamp is
illuminated (which indicates that the recording is
being made).

ERASING

When a new recording is made. all recorded material on that
part of the tape is automatically erased. and only the new
recording remains.

To erase a recorded tape without making a new recording.
set the Input- level controls to their minimum ("0") posi-
tion. press the Tape selector marked CrO,", and set the
Bias controls to their center (click-stop") position.

To erase Metal-coated tape, press the Tape selector
marked "Metal."

Then operate the unit in the usual way for recording.

By following these steps for both sides of the tape. it can be
completely erased.

Automatic-Stop System (Full AutooStop System)

This unit has a full automatic-stop system. When the tape

comes to its and during recording. playback. fast forward or

rewind, the tape-transport mechanism automatically re-

leases and places the unit into the stop mode.

it Because the mechanism automatically stops when the
tape comes to its end. both the operating parts and the
tape itself are protected. This unit is free from problems .,
such as pressure roller deformation resulting from
leaving the unit in the stop condition (without pushing
the Stop button) for a long period of time.

Dolby Recording

This unit includes the Dolby noise-reduction system. which
reduces tape norse to a remarkable degree.

Brieily. the system works as follows: At low sound levels
(where tape noise is most noticeable). the high-frequency
portion of the sound is recorded at a higher level. Tape
noise is not amplified.

During playback. the level of only that portion of the signal
which was increased at the time of the recording. as well as
tape noise. is reduced by a like amount. This causes the
signal to be heard at a normal level. and the tape noise to
be reduced significantly. '

bespielten Bandes eine Aufzeichnung ohne Anhalmn des
Bandlaufs zu beginnen.

1. Bel Einstellung dieses Gerétes auf die Wledergabe-
Betrlebsan den Mithér-Wahlschalter auf Mlthéren des
Klangquellentons einstellen.

2. Bei Bandlauf in der Wiedergabe-Betriebsart kann eine
Aufzeichnung durch Drficken der Aufnahmetaste be!
niedergednickter Wiedergabetaste begonnen werden.

. Wird bei Wiedergabe nur dle Aufnahmetaste gedrfickt.
éndert sich die AufnahmeoBetrlebsart nicht. Nach-
prflfen, ob die Aufnahme-Anzeigelampe aufleuchtet
(und dadurch anzeigt, daB elne Autzelchnung durch-
gefdhn wird).

LOSCHEN

Bei elner Neuaufzeichnung warden alle frOher auf das Band
aufgezelcnneten Programme automatlsch geléscht und
durch die Neuaufzeichnung ersetzt.

Urn ein bespleltes Band ohne Neuaufzeichnung zu léschen.
die Eingangspegelregler ganz zurfickdrehen (Stéllung "0").
den mn "CrO," bezeichneen Bandwahlschalter drficken
und die Vormagnetlslerungs regler auf ihre mlttlere (RasH
Stellung einstelsen.

Um eln Metallparflkelband zu léschen. den mlt "metal."
bezelchneten Bandwahlschalter drflcken.

Dann das Band bei Einstellung des Games auf die
Aufnahme-Betrlebsart durchlauien lessen.

Auf dlese Welse kann zuerst eme Sene und nach Umdrehen
der Kassette die andere Selte ganz geldscht werden.

Automatisches Stopsystem

Dieses Gerét besilzt ein automatisches Stopsystem.
welches. wenn das Tonband wéhrend Aufnahme. Wieder-
gabe, schnellen Vor- und RUcklauls zum Ende komml. den
Tonbandlauf automafisch stoppt. Die Vorteile dieses auto-
matischen Stopsystems sind:

' Da der Mechanismus das Tonband am Bandende auto-
matisch stoppl. sind sowohl das Tonband als auch die
mechanischen Teile geschmzt.

(Bei diesem Gerlat gibt es keine Andrucksrollendeforma-
tion. welche sons! eintreten kann, wenn ein Gerét-ohne

'den Stopknopf zu bel'a'tigeMUr Iéngere Zeit in der Stop-
position. hervorgerufen durch das Ablauten eines
Tonbandes. verbleibt).

Aufnahmen ml! Dolby

In diesem Gerét ist ein Dolby-Rauschreduzier-System ein-
gebaut. mit dem das Bandrauschen spUrbar vermindert
wird. Hier mbchten wir kurz die Wirkungsweise des Dolby-
Systems beschreiben: Bei Aulnahme von Signalen gerin-
get Intensitét (bei denen sich das Bandtauschen am stérk-
sten stérend bemerkbar macht). werden vor dem Aut-
nehmen auf Band die Hochfrequenzanteile verstérkt. Bei
der Wiedergabe wird dann durch Reduzieren der Intensit'a't
des Teils. der zur Zen der Autnahme angehoben wurde.
gleichermaflen das Rauschen verminden.

Mohflachflltor

FM-Stereo-Rundfunksignale bestehen aus einem 19 kHz-
Steuersignal und einer 38 kHz-Trégerwelle. Wenn eine
Dotby-Aufnahme von einer FM-Stereosendung gemacht
wird. arbeitet die Dolby-Schaltung nicht richtig, weil sie
Signale vom FM-Tuner empffingt. Daher wird aus dem
Rundfunksignal durch ein Mehrfachfilter die uneernschten
Signate herausgefiltert, sodaB Dolby-Auinahmen einwand-
trei gemacht werden kennen.

Wenn Sie eine FM-Stereosendung mit dem Dolby~Rauschre~
duzier-System aulnehmen wollen, vergewissern Sie sich
daher. daB der Dolbyschalter in der filter in"-Position stem

AUFNAHME UND WIEDERGABE MIT EINER
SCHALTUHR (Slehe Abb. 13.)

. Stellen Sie die Schaltuhr aut die gewflnschte Zeit sin. (.19
nach dem Typ der Schaltuht, wird die Stromzuluhr zum
Verstérker. Tonbandgerét und Tuner dadurch ausgeschal-
tet.)

Lesen Sie die Bedienungsanleitung der Schaltuhr {Ur wei-
tere Erkléwngen.

v Damit sind alle Vorbereitungen far die Aufnahme oder
Wiedergabe mil einer Schaltuhr erledigt. Zur gewOnsch-
ten Zeit wird die Stromzuluhr eingeschaltet. wodurch die
Aufnahme oder Wiedergabe beginnt.

-Wenn eine neue Autnahme aut ein bereits bespieltes
Band gemacht werden soll. léschen Sie zuets: den er-
sten Teil der Aufnahme (um sicherzustellen. daB keine
Téne der frUheren Autnahme aut der neuen Aufnahme be-
stehen bleiben). und bereiten Sie dann das Band so vor.
daB die Aufinahme auI einen Teil des Bandes gemacht
wird. der vollsténdig geléscht ist.

Bemerkung:

Wenn Sle mlt elner Schaltuhr wiedergeben wollen.
spielen Sle das Band zuerst elnmal ab, um die
Lautstérke und Tonhéhe mlt den entsprechenden
Bedlenungselementen des Stereoverstérkers elnzus-
tllen. Nach beendeter EInstellung spulen Sie das Band
bis zu der Stelle zurfick. ab weIcher die Wiedergabe mit
der Schaltuhr beginnen soll.
