technical originality alone but also on the
end result: spectacular musical perlorm-
ance and tonal accuracy. Thats why
we've applied our strictest tonal evaluation
criteria to the good-looking. great-
sounding SPSSOOX.

Since most speaker systems utilize

much the same principles for sound
energy conversion and radiation. the
differences among them become rather
subtle and of vital importance. Weve
perfected an unusually large (15-inch)
woofer for the SP-5500X to bring out
the smooth and mellow bass sounds of
today's music and reproduce them at a
high enough level to sound convincingly
live and real, Handling the all-important

tundamental mu5Ical sounds in the middle
spectrum are a pair of twin cone mid-
ranges. while a big horn-type tweeter and
a separate supertweeter reproduce the
highs and ultrahighs with precision and
natural clarityi System balance is the key

Huge 15-lnch Woofer for Smooth and Solid
Bass

Big IS beautiful. especially when you're
talking about today's contemporary musical
sounds. And to reproduce the loud and driving
volume of electric basses. organs and other
popular instruments requires a lot of a book-
shelf-sized speaker system. We've taken care
of this with the huge 15-inch woofer in the
SP~5500X. Its new diaphragm material is a
mixture of speCially-processed kraft pulp and
sulfite pulp. With an acoustically-ideal binding
agent for strength Each woofer cone is hand-
made one at a time for optimum balance. and
shaped by a special non-press molding tech-
nique to assure optimum firmness and internal
loss.

Barium-Ferrite Woofer Magnet and Strain-
Free Output

Since a large woofer requires the finest
magnetic Circuit to achieve proper damping.
we use a very large (52%2-inch) magnet made
of powerful barium-ferrite for ideal perform-
ance A heat-dissipating aluminum v0ice con.
the newlyrdeveloped woofer surround and
other details assure that this big bass unit
accepts a large signal input and delivers an
equally powerful output Without strain. respond-
ing with reduced intermodulation distortion
and hardly any split vibration.

High Efficiency for Wider Dynamic Flange

Though the SP-SSOOX accepts a very large
input l120 watts. peak). its eIIICiency is high
enough (98dB at 1m/1W) to allow the use of
any receiver or amplifier. large or small.
Sufficient volume in either stereo or 4-channel
is assured. and with the increased efficiency
comes the wider dynamic range you need for
today's improved records. tapes. and FM
broadcasts.

Twin Cone Midrange Drivers

Nearly all musical instruments. including the
human voice. have their fundamental frequen-
cies in the 1.000Hz to 6.000Hz range-the
so-called "middle" of the frequency spectrum.

SPECIFICATIONS

For precise and proper reproduction of these.
the SP-SSOOX features not one but two large
(Sis-inch) cone midrange speakers. arranged
symmetrically across the upper battle for wider
dispersion. The cones themselves are of NUKP
and other selected pulp materials for a honey-
rich sound. Tonal continuity from the woofer is
smooth and natural thanks to speciallyoeSigned
back caVities With felt-damped ports.

Horn Tweeter for Better High-Frequency
Dispersion

Pulsive musical signals in the high ranges
up to 10.000Hz retain their natural clarity in
the SP-SSOOX since we have used a high-
density Alnico-V magnetic in combination with
a die-cast zinc horn. The latter material
features particularly low resonance. and is
designed with an equalizer to align phase
response and av0id the dips and peaks in high
frequency reproduction.

Mylar Film Supertweeter for Extended Highs
Most instruments-even cymbals-rarely
produce a fundamental tone over 10.000Hz.
But they do produce harmonics in the super-
high range. and the SP-SSOOX's speCIal horn-
type supertweeter handles them prefectly.
It's a die-cast zinc unit with an equalizer
to reduce phase agitation for crisp and shim-
mering results. lts moving mass is low. thanks
to its thin (30,» mylar film diaphragm and
CCAW (Copper-Clad Aluminum Wire) voice
con. A Silicon material is used for diaphragm
damping to improve transient response.

Crossover Network

Built around a ferrite~core capacitor to keep
distortion less than 1.0% over the entire range.
this thoroughly-tested crossover network is
more than strong enough to handle a 120 watt
input Without strain.

Level Control

The convenient level control on the front
battle has three positions (SOFT. NATURAL
and CLEAR) to let you adjust output to best
match your room. your music and your ears.

Damped Bass-Reflex Enclosure

A damped pipe-duct in the SP-55OOX
extends the bass. Cabinet construction ewith
mifered edges and masterful carpentry through-
out-is strong and sturdy The removable Kumiko
handcarved grille is the unmistakable proof
that you own a Sansui System -the best money
can buy.
