8F4oclcl FOUR.CHANNEL TODAY Four-channel systems today are divided into two distinct types: the discrete and the matrix. Discrete, of course, is both the most authentic in terms of sound quality, and the most expensive, since it requires not only a four-channel tape deck but special four-channel tapes. All discrete systems have a fixed formula and present no problem in choice of'system for your personal use. Matrix-type systems are a much different story, however. There exist many matrix systems, from many four-channel manufacturers, and each has a somewhat different encoding process. ln matrix-type systems, the original four-channel sources are mixed or blended and then converted into two- channel signals. This conversion is called "encoding," and the signals are then transmitted by conventional two-channel transmission sources. From the point-of-view of the listener, it is required that these encoded signals then be converted back into four-channel sounds, and this conversion is called "decoding." The entire matrix four-channel system is often referred to as lhe 4-2-4 transmission system. ln developing the QX-4000, Pioneer devoted great amounts of research time with all the popular matrix systems, and then developed a basic formula that can be applied successfully to decode the many kinds of matrix systems now on the market. This is called the REGULAR MATRIX. Another very popular matrix system is called the SQ system, but it is in no way compatible with the regular matrix-type system. lt requires a completely different matrix decoder, and this decoder is also included in the new Pioneer QX-4000 receiver. ln a nutshell then, the QX-4000 has adopted the two most popular systems of matrix decoding so that you can have access to all the four-channel matrixed records now available on the market. THE REGULAR MATRIX DECODER and echo effects are channel record, and channel through the always included on a conventional two- then decoded into the effects of four- matrix decoder. 4-channel Recording 4-channel Reproduction Matrix four-channel systems share a mutual compatibility with conventional two-channel stereo systems, since the transmission system is basically the same. The QX-4000 regular matrix decodes two-channel matrixed sources and converts them into outstanding four-channel sound. Further- more, since two-channel sound programs are produced by first recording the original sounds on a multi-channel system using a series of microphones, the original reverberations The matrix encoding principle of the SO ,Vrt"il;;; regular matrix system is quite different. ln regular matrix systems, the four-channel signals are recorded from different angles against lhe 45" /45" conventional record groove. This inevitably results in crosstalk between the front two speakers. The SQ system, on the other hand, maintains the 45" /45" principle, by introducing an additional phase difference of 90 degrees, with the left rear channel information translated into a clockwise circular motion and the right rear channel infor- mation translated into a counter-clockwise circular motion of v the stylus tip. This principle is called "circular modulation". Thus, as the recbrd rotates, a clockwise helix is produced for the left rear channel, and a counter-clockwise helix for the right rear channel. TWO SYSTEMS OF MATRIX DECODING There are some different kinds of matrix systems of four- channel stereo available today that it takes a very advanced receiver to handle them. Pioneer's QX-4000 is the advanced receiver. lt features a REGULAR MATRIX decoder so that you can choose from almost all the important matrixed program sources now on the market, no matter what their names. And, since the SQ matrix system has no distinct compatibility with the other matrix systems, Pioneer's QX-4000 has a SQ matrix decoding circuit built-in so that you can benefit from this popular-type system, too. But by having both the regular matrix and the SQ matrix decoding circuitry, there will be very few four-channel program sources that you can't use with the QX-4000. AMPLIFIER SECTION The QX-4000 provides 10 wattsx4 continuous power output at 8 ohms, with four-channels driven, so that you have more than enough power to fill a regular-sized listening room with clean, clear sound. This is also enough power to adequately drive a large-sized speaker system. And still, the QX-4000 is reasonably priced. - SENSITIVE FM TUNER SECTIQN The FM tuner section of the QX-4000 has a variety of important features for sensitive FM tuning. lt employs a linear scale, extra-long FM dial as well as an extra-large signal strength meter for easy, precise tuning. The FM front end section is equipped with all the very latest electronic circuitry, too, including an FET (field effect transistor), and there are lCs and ceramic filters in the lF section. The result of this circuitry is fine sensitivity and selectivity, so that your FM broadcasts are distinctively clear. Moreover, so that irritating inter- station noise is cancelled while you're tuning, the QX-4000 is equipped with an FM muting switch. VERSATILE CONTROL FUNCTIONS The QX-4000 features individual bass and treble tone con- trols that permit individual adjustment for both front and rear channels. There are also three different balance controls (front/rear, front left/right and rear left/right) so that you can achieve optimum sound balance of the four independent channels of your stereo system. ln addition to these controls, the QX-4000 provides outstanding versatility. With its multiple input jacks, you can connect a turntable, a tape deck and one other auxiliary program source such as a cassette tape deck. ln addition, you can connect an additional pair of speak- ers to the rear channel, making it possible for you to savor four-channel sound with different speaker systems. The QX- 4000 also equips with loudness switch for natural sound con- tour at low volume levels. OTI-IER FEATURE$ For its practical price, the QX-4000 provides more features than any comparable make. ln addition to the above features, the receiver includes program source illumination on the upper part of the dial, as well as illuminated indication of two or four-channel programs. The entire unit is mounted in a handsome wooden cabinet, so that it looks as attractive as it sounds. ()rrrt)Neefil"
