The Legend Continues... Nº502 Media Console Modern home entertainment systems are comprised of an assortment of components; however , its the media console that defines the boundaries of the systems overall potential. It is r esponsible for accomplishing many dif ferent critical functions and has a dir ect influence on everything fr om the picture on the scr een to the sound that emanates fr om all of the speakers. Fr om the pr ecisely machined aluminum surfaces of the chassis to the elegant backlit engraved glass logo embedded in the fr ont panel, the Nº502 is a modern interpr etation of the Mark Levinson aesthetic, but that is only the beginning. The Sound Mark Levinson pr oducts have always been highly r egarded for their sound quality and the Nº502 is no exception. T owards that end, every part of the audio path fr om the input to output was car efully consider ed and designed to ensur e optimal sound quality . Starting with the chassis, it was designed to double as an integrated radio fr equency (RF) shield pr oviding immunity from the RF emissions that ar e commonly radiated by other devices. These emissions ar e a common source of noise that can find its way into the sensitive audio cir cuits and degrade sound quality . Another way for noise to enter a system is thr ough the input and output connectors which ar e usually connected directly to the chassis, pr oviding a direct path for noise to get in. T opr event this fr om occurring on the Nº502, the input and output connectors ar e electrically isolated fr om the chassis. Inside the chassis, the Nº502 utilizes two AC power supplies to completely isolate the digital and analog signal paths. A digital supply is used to power the digital cir cuits, and a toroidal power transformer is used to power the analog audio cir cuits. In addition, both power supplies ar ecar efully shielded in a chamber inside the chassis to further pr event transformer noise fr om leaking into the delicate analog cir cuits and degrading sound quality . Another method employed to r educe noise is the use of 18 layer cir cuit boards with minimal surface etches. They help to lower radiated emissions within the chassis. W e also isolate the contr ol signals fr om the audio signals to ensur e that they do not interfer e with them. In the event that any common mode noise is pr esent inside the system, all of the analog audio signals ar e routed inside the chassis as dif ferential (balanced) signals, to cancel this noise out. T o r educe jitter and digital noise, a specially designed low voltage dif ferential signaling cir cuit is utilized. A pr oprietary direct digital synthesizer fr equency locked loop contr ols the audio master clock r esulting in extraor dinary jitter performance. This is a closed loop contr ol algorithm which impr oves bandwidth and r esolution. Gr eat car ewas also taken in the implementation of the level contr ols for the Nº502 which of fer an adjustment range of 120dB, pr eserving the full r esolution of the signal. Fewer passive components wer e employed to reduce noise and distortion, and digital quantization noise is exceptionally low , even at the lowest volume settings. This ensur es that the level contr ols do not significantly degrade the sound of the audio passing thr ough them, common in many other less rigor ous designs. The Nº502 featur es Harman Internationals proprietary Logic 7 ® technology in addition to the standar d suite of Dolby ®and DTS ®listening modes. Logic 7 pr ocessing is widely regarded in the industry as the best surr ound sound process available. In simple terms, Logic 7 pr ocessing works by utilizing a unique algorithm that engages all of the speakers in a system to enhance the r ealism of the sound. By analyzing the spatial cues included in the original sound, Logic 7 pr ocessing presents them in a manner that makes the overall experience much mor e engaging and enveloping. Another important detail is the Nº502 s bass management system which utilizes phase matched signal paths to pr event signal cancellation. Whenever two signals ar e combined, as occurs in all bass management systems, the potential for sound altering signal cancellation incr eases. By phase matching the signal path, the Nº502 ensur es that you hear every detail, the way it was intended, r egardless of the speaker configuration. The Picture Although Mark Levinson pr oducts are known for their superlative sound quality , the Nº502 also establishes a new benchmark for pictur e quality. In addition to pr oviding an array of analog and High Definition Multimedia Inter face (HDMI) inputs and outputs, the Nº502 also includes a state of the ar t video pr ocessor that can convert all of the inputs into a single output and scale them to the optimum r esolution for driving the display device. This simplifies the overall system configuration while pr oviding the absolute best pictur e quality possible. T o clean up and sharpen compr essed images from sources such as standar d DVD and satellite/cable TV br oadcasts, the Nº502 includes advanced noise r eduction and detail enhancement. Combined with the built in scaler ,standar ddefinition sour ces look like true high definition sour ces. The Nº502 also includes motion adaptive video de interlacing with edge interpolation for impr oving both standard definition and high definition sour ces. And for the highest quality video sour ces currently available today ,the Nº502 r eadily handles 1080P/24Hz video inputs and outputs with ease. The Nº502 featur es an impressive six HDMI ™ inputs, each with its own r eceiver to deliver exceptionally fast HDMI switching and the ability to pr eview one HDMI input while watching another . It also features two HDMI outputs, so it can alter nately drive two different displays. Combined with the impr essive video pr ocessing capabilities, the Nº502 sets a new standar d for pictur equality ,even when compar ed to dedicated, stand alone video pr ocessors. The Legend Continues... Nº502 Main Video Board -Video board with twin Gennum ®VXP ®10 bit broadcast quality processors for 7.8 gigaflops of processing power - ZBC technology allows the power and ground planes to act as a distributed capacitor which functions much better at high frequencies than conventional bypass capacitors. This reduces radiated emissions and helps to lower the overall noise in the system. - 18 Layer PCB allows more of the signals to be routed on internal layers. When signals are routed between ground and power layers, they are ef fectively shielded and radiate considerably less. This significantly enhances video signal to noise ratio. Nº502
