Instructions

Unpacking:

Check your speakers carefully.

If there is transit damage. contact
your dealer immediately. Keep
the original packing in case you
need it in future.

Associated
Components:

Use only high quality associated
components. Your infinity speaker
is an accurate reproducer-it will
reproduce distortion just as
accurately as music. Your amplifier
or receiver should have a continu-
ous, FTC, 'rms' power output per
channel within the range suggested
for your speaker. Do not use an
amplifier or receiver with a lower
power output than the recom-
mended minimum. Over-driving

a low power amplifier results in
high frequency distortion which
can damage your speaker.

Connecting up:

MAKE SURE THE AMPLIFIER/
RECElVER IS SWITCHED OFF.
Connect each speaker using
two-conductor cord. coded for
polarity. (Coding may be by color.
or by a thin ridge or stripe on
the insulation of one conductor.)
Ordinary lamp cord is normally
sufficient. If the speakers are
more than 10 feet or 3 meters from
your amplifier. use of 16 gauge
cord is recommended. (Finer
gauges over long distances will
impair the performance.)
Connect each 'channel' of the
amplifier separately to its speaker.
it is important that the speakers
are connected to the amplifier/
receiver in phasel Use the
polarity-coding to make sure that
the '+' (red) terminal of each
speaker is connected to its +'
amplifier output (sometimes red-
coded. or marked 'hot' or 'Iive'),
and the-'(black) speaker terminal
to its -' (ground) amplifier output.
Before switching on, check
carefully to make sure that stray
or frayed strands of wire are not
'shorting' between +' and '-'
either at amplifier or speaker
terminals.

Speaker Use amplifier or receiver of:
Qa 15-150 watts per channel 'rms'
Qb 15-150 watts per channel 'rms'
Quantum Jr. 20-200 watts per channel 'rms
Quantum 5 30-250 watts per channel rms'
Quantum 4 30-250 watts per channel rms'
Quantum 3 35-250 watts per channel rms'
Quantum 2 45-350 watts per channel 'rms'
Quantum Line Source 100-500 watts per channel 'rms'
Column ll 15-250 watts per channel rms'
3000. 4000 10-125 watts per channel 'rms'

Bi-amplification
(QLS, Q2 only):

The Quantum Line Source and
Quantum 2 loudspeakers
have connections to allow 'bi-
amplification: (The use of separate
amplifiers for the woofer and the
midrange/hlgh frequency section,
which allows somewhat cleaner
reproduction at high sound levels.)
Make sure to remove the straps
on the binding post when con-
necting the speakers in this way.
You do not need an electronic
crossover when 'bi-amping the
QLS or the Quantum 2. If you are
using two stereo amplifiers.
connect each so that its two chan-
nels are used [or one speaker
system -one channel for bass
and one for the rest of the ire-
quency range. The passive cross-
overs in the speaker remain In
circuit. and provide careiully
tailored roll-offs which would be
difiicult to duplicate with a
separate electronic crossover.

Positioning:

For the best stereo image, the
speakers should be 7 to 10 feet

(2 to 3 meters) apart. and not less
than the same distance from the
normal listening position.

Set the tweeter and (where
fitted) midrange controls to 'flat'
(or. where a 'flat' position is not
indicated. at mid-position) when
experimenting to find the best
room/speaker positions for bass
tonal balance.

All loudspeakers give the least
coloration when placed at least
two feet (0.7 meters) away from
corners and walls. and (except for
floor-standing models) well above
the floor. Infinity loudspeakers
are designed to give the correct
tonal balance when used in this
way. Quantum 5. Quantum Jr.. Ga
and Q!) give best results when
used on infinity pedestals. or
raised about 12 inl30cm above
floor level.

It is worthwhile experimenting
with different room positions for
speakers and listeners to obtain
the best results. because room
acoustics vary widely. The position

of your speakers primarily affects
tonal balance between bass and
lower middle frequencies. For
example. if the sound seems bass~
heavy. move the speakers further
irom comers. wall or floor. if the
sound seems bass-light. move
the speakers closer to one of
these room boundaries. Equiva-
lent changes in tonal balance

will result from changing your
listening position.

Infinity Quantum Line Source
speakers have rear tweeters which
provide added 'spaclousness' to
the reproduced sound with certain
source material. There is a switch
to enable the rear tweeter to be
turned off. if desired.

Infinity Quantum Line Source.
Quantum 2 and Quantum 3
speaker systems are made in
mirror-irnage' pairs. to provide
the most accurate stereo effect.
They should be placed with the
tweeters innermost.

Settin the
contro s:

The type and amount of furnish-
ing in the listening room affects
the tonal balance perceived by
the ear particularly between middle
and high frequencies. When you
have found the best location for
your speakers. the tweeter control
should be adjusted if the sound
seems 'bright' or 'duII'. Generally.
rooms with heavy furniture and
drapes will require a higher
tweeter control setting titan
lightly furnished rooms. The
midrange controls (where fitted)
will alter how 'forward' or 'distant'
the sound image Is. Make adjust-
ments In very small steps. listen-
Ing to a variety of recorded
material. The Quantum Line
Source and Quantum 2 feature

a variable crossover-point between
midrange and high frequency
drivers. allowing subtle alteration
of the energy output in this band
to aid further compensation for
the acoustics of the listening
environment.

Feedback:

If. after taking care with positioning
your loudspeakers. the bass
response is 'boomy and lacking
in tightness. or if you hear rumble
when playing records. then the
cause may be acoustic feedback -
which means that vibrations from
the loudspeakers are reaching
your turntable. The extended low-
frequency response of infinity
loudspeakers means that partic-
ular care may be necessary to
Isolate the turntable from these
vibrations. in general. always
make sure that the turntable Is
placed on a heavy. solid support.
as far away as possible from the
loudspeakers. Some turntable]
tone-arm/cartrldge combinations
are much more prone to feedback
than others. and if you continue
to experience difficulty. you
should consult your dealer for
assistance.

Fuses:

Fuses are fitted to some infinity
speaker systems. to protect them
from damage due to electrical
overload. USE ONLY THE SAME
TYPE OF FUSE in replacement.
or the warranty Is void.

Trouble-shooting:

Note that you can use your stereo
system's tWO channels for simple
trouble-shooting. if the sound
quality is distorted. listen to each
speaker to check if the fault Is pre-
sent In both. if it is. the trouble is
likely to be elswhere In your system.
If the fault is In one channel only.
reverse the outputs from your
amplifier to the speakers. right-to-
left and left-to-right. if the distortion
moves to the other channel. the
fault is not in the speaker. (This
technique may also be used to
locate a fault between the amplifier!
receiver and the signal source.)

In case of trouble:

If your speakers are not working
satisfactorily. contact your dealer
or the national distributor for Infinity
products. who will advise you on
the quickest way to have them
checked over and repaired. It In
difficulty. contact the factory for the
name of your nearest authorized
service station. Service under the
terms of the warranty is avalla ble
from any authorized service station.
