MOVING-MAGNET

STEREOPHONIC
PHONOGRAPH

CARTRIDGE
model

0-6

The audio-technica Model AT-6 phonograph
cartridge is an outstanding stereophonic cartridge that,
together with its companion products, features a series of
unique new concepts in the designing of its moving ele-
ments, the key to good performance in moving magnet
type cartridges. Among its many features is the stylus
replacement which is extremely s'anple. its unique system
provides superb frequency response and extremely low
crosstalk, while due to its light mass and high compliance,
perfect tracking is maintained even at very low stylus
pressures.

Some of the unique characteristics of the moving elements of the Model
AT-S moving magnet stereoph'onic cartridge are:
l.Use of 0.6 millimeter diameter hard duralmin pipe for the cantilever. It
has the result of reducing the mass of the moving elements and any irreq-
ularities at the high end of its frequency range are well beyond audible
range.

2. audio-technicas engineers succeeded in devising a new method to
firmly secure the diamond tip to tip of the cantilever without crushing the
cantilever tubing out of shape. Through the adoption of this method, split
vibrations that are liable to arise at the high frequencies are eliminated,
while channel separation does not deteriorate in the higher frequencies as
in the case of other models of comparable price range.

3. Coupled with a tubular magnet, a type that has been proven to provide
better channel separation, the cantilever and its associated components add
the outstanding features to the above.

4. The damper is made of carefully-selected top quality materials, and is man-
ufactured to research-prawn specifications to maintain the moving elements of
the cartridge in their proper positions. The entire cartridge is put together
with care to provide well-adjusted and uniform performance.

All these superb features are given full play through the well-designed mag-
net assembly. Repeated tests, including both carefully calibrated instrument
tests and actual hearing tests using the cartridge in conjunction with the very
best of high fidelity components, all bear out the superiority of the AT-6 phono-
graph cartidge. Its clean and precise stereo-phonic reproduction, providing au-
thentic living presence, creates a world of audio realism beloging only to the
AT-6. lts outstanding features provide equally outstanding performance in re~
production of monaural records too.

GENERAL NOTES ON HANDLING OF AT-6

MOUNTING:

The mounting centers for the AT-6 phonograph, cartridge are the standard
I2.7rnm ( l /2} EIA mounting centers. It can therefore be momted on virtually
all tone arms currently on the market.

The cartridge must be mounted securely in position with the stylus perpen-
dicular to the surface of the turntable.

Stylus pressure must be maintained at less than 5 grams. Pressure should
be checked with a proper stylus pressure gauge. if tracking force is excessive,
the precisionfinished moving elements of the AT-6 will be distorted out of

The shielded cables used to connect the pickup to the amplifier should be
as short as possible, preferably less than three feet in length. If the shielded
cables are extended excessively, not only will high frequency reproduction
deteriorate, but external huh and noise they be picked up. In order to keep the
length of the cables to a mininun, the record player and amplifier should be as
close to each other as possible. At the same time, however, if the transformer
ol the amplifier is too close to the cartridge, transformer flux leakage may be
picked up and burn may ensue. By changing the relative positions of the am-
plifier and the record player, it should be possible to find a hum-free setting.

00 not make solder connections directly to the pins of the cartridge. Ap-
plying heat to the pins may result in severing of the internal connections or
other trouble, so the arm leads should first be connected to the lugs provided
with the cartridge, and then the lugs should be fixed with the terminals.

STYLUS REPLACEMENT:

The stylus of the AT-G is a special type manufactured to precision tol-
erances by audio-technica. It is of a unique shape, for ease. in replace-
ment, and products of other makes cannot be substituted.

Replacement of the stylus is very simple, as shown in the drawings. A big
feature of the AT-G cartridge is that the stylus can be replaced without
removing the cartridge from the pickup tone arm. Through the use of three
stylus models-the 0.7 mil radius ATS-7D, and 0.3XO.7 mil elliptical tip
ATS-EL, optimun results can be obtained.

SPECIAL NOTES:

The stylus of the AT-G has been adjusted to precision tolerances in order
to maintain high performance. Therefore, applying excessive force by the
fingers or dropping the cartridge on the turntable will seriously affect the
positioning of the moving elements and performance will be impaired. There-
fore, maximum care should be exercised in handling. When dusting the stylus
tip, a brush with a long and soft tip should be used. The type of brush
used to clean camera lenses will serve admirably.

For satisfactory performance at low tracking pressures,a properly designed
good quality tone arm must be used.

The turntable drive motor must also be a high quality unit with low wow
and flutter, and little vibration. It must also have very, low flux leakage.
If the turntable motor mounting board is thin and flimsy, or if the motor is
mounted improperly, runble will be picked up.
